Dream Big Dreams and Then Make Them Come True
In reviewing more than 3300 studies of leaders, the one quality that all leaders had in common was that of vision. It was their ability to imagine an ideal future well in advance of creating it that took ordinary men and women and raised them to a level of personal and professional leadership. And it is the same with you.
Henry David Thoreau wrote, "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost, that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them." Your vision is an imaginary creation of the ideal life you would like to live, in every respect. You create it as an expression of the values you hold most dear. From the very day that you develop a clear vision for whom you are and where you are going in life, you begin to become a superior person, and soon you begin to accomplish superior results.
Let Your Mind Float Freely
One of the great secrets of success is to "dream big dreams." It is to let your mind float freely into the future and imagine that you have no limitations on what you can be, have or do. Imagine for the moment that you have all of the resources that you would ever need to achieve the highest goals to which you could ever aspire. Imagine you have all the time, money, people, contacts and intelligence that you could ask for to become everything that you could ever become.
Create Your Ideal Future
Make a dream list. Let yourself fantasize and let your mind float into the future. What would you like to do? Where would you like to go? What would you like to accomplish? And most of all, what kind of a person would you like to become? Since you attract into your life people and situations that are in harmony with the person you really are, what kind of attributes and qualities would you like to develop in yourself so that you can life the very best life you can imagine, surrounded by the kind of people you would most enjoy?
Project Forward Five Years
All the great movers and shakers of the sales industry and of every other field, have been visionaries and dreamers. They have practiced what is called "back from the future" thinking. They have projected themselves forward three to five years, and then, looking around from that imaginary vantage point, they have begun thinking of the things they would have to do in order to get there. They have started with their goals in mind, and then worked backwards. With their vision clear before them, they gain a better and better idea of the things they will have to do and the people they will have to become to make their vision into their reality.
Action Exercises
Now, here are two things you can do immediately to put these ideas into action.
First, dream big dreams. Imagine what you would really like to be and do and have as if you had no limitations at all. What is your vision for yourself and your life?
Second, project yourself forward five years into the future and imagine that your life and career are perfect in every respect. What could you start doing today to make this vision come true?
