STACEY MONTGOMERY'S DREAM STORY (added 2003)
I have had the pleasure of working with Stacey Montgomery online over the years with her websites. I am so proud of how she is doing with pursuing her dreams, that I wanted her to share her dream story with you. (Wendy of Dreamish.com)
I have many, many dreams. I dream about my design business, I dream about writing, I dream about my son's future, I dream about having the ultimate kitchen, I dream, I dream, I dream. I have been dreaming about being a writer since I was about 6 years old. When I was in first grade I wrote and illustrated my first book. It was about 5 pages long and told the story of friendship. As I grew up, I wrote and read poetry. I always thought about how intelligent and insightful poets seemed to be. I published a few poems in college, but never considered that I could make a good living as a writer. So, I ended up going to law school. I was able to publish a few articles in law journals while in law school. While practicing, I was again able to publish articles in professional publications.
Quickly realizing that except for the writing part of it I did not enjoy practicing law (practicing law was never a dream!), I stopped practicing law and began to focus on my creative interests-writing and designing. In 2000 when I was pregnant with my son, Isaiah, I launched CelebratingChildren.com, an African American parenting Web site. In the beginning I wrote all of the articles. Now I work with several writers and occasionally contribute my own articles.
I am proud to say that I recently published my first book, Black Families Online: Directory of Online Resources for Black Parents (iUniverse, Inc. July, 2003). As a mother and in the course of publishing CelebratingChildren.com, I do a lot of online research. Black Families Online was born out of 3 years of experience online searching for parenting information for visitors to CelebratingChildren.com, for friends and for myself. It is a compendium of over 380 online resources with information, products and services particularly targeted to Black families such as books, black history, college scholarships, toys, greeting cards, health information, homeschooling resources, etc.
I am in the process of writing 2 books about the joy of my life-- my son, Isaiah. The first one, Isaiah's Story, is about his premature birth and stay in a neonatal intensive care unit. Weighing 1 pound 14 ounces at birth and experiencing a few developmental delays, raising Isaiah has been an incredible learning process. So, my second book is about lessons I am learning raising Isaiah. In addition, I have 2 other books in the works.
As for my design business, I started it by designing my first Christmas card about 8 years ago. I experienced some success-getting orders from many small card stores and books stores, as well as large retailers such as Marshall Fields and Nordstrom. Over the past 4 years I have been focusing on other activities, but recently decided to turn my attention back to the design business. I relaunched the business with a new name, Stacey M Design. I am in the process of developing over 50 new card and stationery designs, along with several gift items.
I am definitely living my dreams. Not only do I have a wonderful family, every day I am writing, publishing and designing.
